A.    Brain Based Learning and Today’s Youth: What Research Says about the Brain/Body/Heart Connection – Dr. Patty Shackleford, Ph.D., P.K. Concepts, Inc.

Target Audience: Community-based programs, courts, law enforcement, mental health, school counseling, social services, and teachers/school administrators

Presentation Abstract: Participants will learn a basic understanding of the brain development and how this physical development impacts the learning, emotional, and decision-making processes of youth (and adults).  In this workshop, participants will actively participate and leave with simple, fun and directly applicable strategies to use for themselves as well as for the youth they work with and serve.  Participants of this workshop will be presented with an introduction to brain-based tools and understanding necessary to assist youth in developing their full potential for improving overall focus, academic skills, rational thinking, and emotional stability.  Participants will leave with new tools that can be used daily to rekindle their spark for the work they do with today’s youth.  These tools will build a bridge for greater understanding for what makes young people act as they do in today’s society.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Participants will learn about how the brain works and gain a better understanding of the causes of academic, social, and emotional delays.
  2. Participants will learn how to use movements to integrate the hemispheres of the brain for calmer behavior and improved focus.
  3. Participants will learn specific techniques for improving self-esteem and connecting with youth.
