H.    Preventing Intimate Partner Violence: Strategies for Adolescents – Theresa Harrison, PhD

Presentation Abstract:  Intimate partner violence can be prevented by giving adolescents information and tools designed to help them develop healthy relationship skills.  This workshop will provide individuals who work with adolescents guidelines for addressing healthy relationship topics, examples of skill-building activities, and offer a forum for discussion on the impact that dating violence can have on teens.  The workshop will also provide a general overview of domestic violence and the ways that intimate partner violence can be identified among adolescents.

 

Learning Objectives:

 

1.      Participants will be able to define intimate partner violence as it relates to adolescents and ways to identify dating violence among teens.

2.      Participants will understand the societal traditions and media messages that uphold intimate partner violence and the impact these messages have on adolescents.

3.      Participants will engage in activities that can be used in the classroom or small group setting to help educate teens about the traits of a healthy relationship and prevent intimate partner violence.

4.      Participants will learn about various curriculums and resources available to put prevention programs in place within their organizations.
